Art Essay Sample – Abstractionism

 Art Essay Sample

Does an artist need talent to create abstractionist pictures?

Art is one of many platforms through which a person can express themselves. Ideas, ideology and beliefs can be put on display to convey a message or feeling. When there is no attempt for the art to represent external reality or physical objects, it may be considered abstract. Art is different things to different people and one painting or sculpture can induce varying feelings amongst its spectators. Therefore, talent in the context of abstractionism is not necessary, as it is relative to this specific art form.

One of the most lauded abstract artists. Pablo Picasso, was revolutionary in the development of Cubism. Cubism was born in response to a desire for a revitalization in Western art. “The Cubists challenged conventional forms of representation, such as perspective, which had been the rule since the Renaissance.

Their aim was to develop a new way of seeing which reflected the modern age.” If a style of art can be created with the purpose of invoking new ideas, how then can one be talented in that style if it never before existed? If one viewer of a piece of art takes away the same message from it that the artist intended, that could be considered a success and therefore that artist can be considered talented.

When Clara Lieu, an art professor at RISD was asked if an abstract artist needs to be proficient in traditional techniques, she replied: “I don’t think traditional skills are in any way required to be taken seriously as an abstract artist. If the abstract work is strong and compelling on its own, then I don’t think most people will care exactly how you got there.”

Art is one of the great forms of expression where each person can have their own individual style and message to convey. As long as they are true to their message, they don’t need talent. The message is what is important.
