Why Would Dante Place Jason In So Deep In Hell If He Respects Classical Literature?
The main thing to consider here is that respecting something and then doing what he morally considers right are two very different things. Meaning that Dante could very well still respect classical literature even while making the decision to put Jason in Hell for the wrongdoings he committed, because there is a difference between admiring classical literature and giving your admiration’s a moral pass and therefore condoning their acts. However, Dante seemed to have had a reputation for going easier on those who had a connection to classical literature and typically gave them either little or no punishment for their crimes (Pack).
Jason was not a writer of classical literature, just a character. Perhaps that could be one of the reasons that he chose to demonize Jason instead of spare him for his acts, because he felt no connection to his character. Jason committed several acts that Dante was known to see as sins, mostly doing with women (Pack). For example, Jason seduced many different women and then abandoning them when they either needed help or would end up pregnant (Beauprez). Jason kept up this bad habit and that led to further suffering in the people he left behind. He was a seducer to these women and therefore he went to the eighth circle of Hell to which he was among other seducers.
Even though, leaving pregnant women behind in today’s time seems a little less Hell condemning – there was high collateral damage due to Jason’s actions (Ossa). One of the women, Medea murdered his children and another one of the women he was with, Cerusa, and therefore also condemned herself to Hell. These souls were lost due to the actions Jason decided to take. Considering all the incidents that came with the choices of Jason, his placement in the eighth circle of Hell seems to be accepted easily.
